for an Invited Paper for the MAR07 Meeting of The American Physical Society Anti-Jahn-Teller effect and d-wave phonon mechanism in cuprates HIROSHI KAMIMURA, Tokyo University of Science Undoped cuprates are Jahn-Teller (JT) Materials [1] and Mott AF insulators [2]. When holes are doped, the octahedrons or pyramids elongated by the JT effect shrink. We call such distortion against the JT effect “anti-Jahn-Teller effect”[3]. By the interplay of the anti-Jahn-Teller effect and Mott physics, the two multiplets, the Zhang-Rice singlet and the Hund’s coupling triplet, become nearly degenerate, and thus the hole-carriers in the underdoped regime form a metallic state, by taking the two multiplets alternately in the presence of the local AF order without destroying it [3,4]. On the basis of this two-component K-S model with small Fermi surfaces, the mechanism of superconductivity is discussed by the interplay of the electron-phonon interactions and local AF order [5,3]. It is shown that (1) the phase difference of wave functions between upand down-spin carriers leads to the gap of dx2-y2 symmetry, and (2) the calculated concentration dependences of Tc and of isotope effects for LSCO are consistent with recent experimental results including anomalous isotope effects [6]. Finally the origin of the high-energy pseudogap is discussed based on the K-S model [3]. [1] J.G. Bednorz and K.A. Mueller, Z. Phys. B64, 189 (1986). [2] P.W. Anderson, Science 235, 1196 (1987). Finite-wavevector Jahn-teller-pairing and Superconductivity in the Cuprates. Typeset Using Revt E X 1

A model interaction is proposed in which pairing is caused by a non-local Jahn-Teller (JT)-like instability due to the coupling between planar O states and k = 0 phonons. Apart from pairing, the interaction is found to naturally allow metallic stripe formation. The consequences of the model for supercon-ductivity in the cuprates are discussed. The model is shown to be consistent with numerous s...

Berryonic Matter in the Cuprates

A novel form of Jahn-Teller (JT) effect in the cuprates can be reinterpreted as a conventional JT effect on a lattice with a larger unit cell. There is a triplet of instabilities, parametrized by a pseudospin, consisting of a form of the low-temperature tetragonal phase, a charge density wave phase, and a flux phase (orbital antiferromagnet). On a single 4-Cu plaquette, the problem is of E ⊗ (b...

The Influence of the Dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect on the Phonon-Scattering Mechanism at Acceptors in Semiconductors with Cubic Symmetry

The ground state of acceptors in cubic semiconductors is fourfold degenerate (I?,) and the interaction with the lattice vibrations leads to the possibility of a Jahn-Teller effect [l]. The extended nature of the wave function of these defects [ 2 ] has two important consequences : (i) the interaction is mainly with long-wavelength acoustic phonons, (ii) because of the large elastic energy assoc...

Vibronic Mechanism of the Isotope and Pressure Effects in Cuprate

The doped cuprates are considered to be a system of local spinless bosons moving in a lattice of the hole pseudo-Jahn-Teller centers CuO 4 . A detailed qualitative and quantitative description of the vibronic mechanism determining both the isotope substitution and the external pressure effect on Tc is given. This mechanism can properly interpret the principal peculiarities of isotopic and baric...
